The Sun Temple Reborn
The Kalika Mata Temple, originally built in the 8th century by Chitrangna Mori, is one of the oldest shrines within Chittorgarh Fort. Originally dedicated to Surya (the Sun God), it was partially destroyed during the 1303 siege by Alauddin Khalji.
In the 15th century, during the reign of Rana Kumbha, the temple was rebuilt and rededicated to Kalika Mata, a form of Goddess Bhadrakali. It serves as the Kuldevi of the Panwar clan and is home to an Akhanda Jyoti (perpetual flame) burning since the 14th century.
